Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma (ALD & PES) Honor Society came into existence at the University of Maryland in November 1999 under the leadership, of then Alpha Lambda Delta Adele H. Stamp President, Stephen Murphy. The Dean of Undergraduate Education, Dr. Robert Hampton, had decided to allow the re-activation of Phi Eta Sigma, another Freshmen Honor Society, very similar in purpose to Alpha Lambda Delta. Phi Eta Sigma had been inactive on the campus since 1990.
In a number of meetings between Dr. Hampton and Dr. Katherine Pedro Beardsley, Chapter Advisor for Alpha Lambda Delta, it was determined to have one student organization on the campus which represented both honor societies. Dr. Beardsley took this proposal to the Alpha Lambda Delta Student Executive Board and the Board agreed.
